Podcast #167
Off Broadway West presents THE LADIES OF THE CAMELLIAS written by Lillian Groag. It is a fictional meeting between two 19th century divas, the Italian Eleanor Duse and the French Sarah Bernhardt. They both rivaled each other in reputation and actually played the same roles on the same stage with the same sets. Playwright Lillian Groag has invented incidents and meetings between the two prima donnas and the men in their lives and uses the mise en scene for a number of wonderful insights about theatre, actors, writers and that strange thing rumored to be on the horizon called a director.
Joyce Henderson (who plays Eleanor Duse) and Richard Harder (who plays Alexander Dumas Fils), co-founders of Off Broadway West, discuss the intricacies of this play. Both are “experienced” actors and have extensive credits. Joyce tends to be humble in nature with a healthy undercurrent confidence. Richards confidence is more evident as evidenced by his vernacular, speech patterns and vocabulary. These cats sound like they have the acting chops to warrant you to go see their work. And listen in as they discuss why you need to go see their show.

Nebunele Theatre presents MEDEA KNOWS BEST at the Exit Theatre’s Divafest 2008. Nebunele means “little crazies” in Romania. And these crazy ladies discuss their adaptation of the Greek classic, Medea, written by Euripides. If you know the classic story, you know it is riff with jealousy, lust, anger and infanticide (although the kids in Medea weren’t infants, I just can think of the correct word for ‘to kill one’s children). Listen in.

The Pleasanton Playhouse is presenting THE MUSIC MAN, being performed at The Bankhead Theater in Livermore, CA. Now understand, the Pleasanton playhouse produces family entertainment, so I took that into consideration when I was interviewing director John Baiocchi, and lead actor Thomas Reardon (pictured). The interesting thing about this production is that Tom is a judge that presides over criminal cases in the Alameda County district. Listen in as they talk about their style, relationship and what the story of The Music Man is all about.
